It’s the most beautiful floral time of the year! It’s peony season!
It’s that beautiful time of year again where the scented blousy seasonal wonders that are peonies make their way to our vases.
Peonies are believed to show romance, prosperity, riches, and compassion. And are also associated with a happy marriage! I can see why they are a firm favourite with customers and florists!
As a florist these are an absolute favourite of mine! Beautiful to look at, smell incredible and available in shades to complement you home. What is not to love?!
If you grow you own or pop to your local florist to pick up these amazing blooms, here are some care tips to help you make the most of the seasonal wonder that is the peony.
*Peonies last longer when harvested in bud. You can check this by gently touching/squeezing the bud, and if it feels like a marshmallow, it’s ready to open. Avoid the ones that feel like marbles, they are not developed enough.
*Don’t worry that when your peonies arrive, they are not the big fluffy flowers of your dreams. They can open to be three times the size of their little bud form.
*Buds are not perfect and may have brown spots or imperfections. This is normal and they open to be beautiful peonies.
*Always Use a clean vase!
*On average you can expect your peonies to have a vase life of 5-7 days. To help them last longer, avoid direct sunlight, retrim the stems at a 45 degree angle every couple of days to help them stay hydrated, and keep in a cool room.
* Always remove any leaves that fall below your water line. It prevents bacteria build up and stinky vases!
* Use the flower food provided, it really does provide all the nutrients your peonies need!
But what if you need your peonies in bloom faster
- Keep your peonies somewhere warm with some lukewarm water for them to drink and add that all important flower food, it will help their beautiful blooms come out quicker!
- Give them some TLC! I know I’m asking you to massage your peonies, but believe me it will help! Give them a gentle massage at the base of the flower (where the petals join the stem) and you will help the petals open faster.
If you would love some peonies in your vase (and life!) We would love to help!
